I had actually planned to watch one of the war films I’d downloaded, but started to watch this instead, mainly because it looked so beautiful.
Scarlett Johansson plays Griet, a young girl who takes a job as a maid in the household of artist Johannes Vermeer. His wife dislikes Griet, and as Vermeer’s interest in her grows, particularly after the painter’s patron commissions a portrait of her, things turn to hate.
Every scene in the film is made to look like a painting and it’s without doubt visually stunning. Ultimately it is style over substance, as very little happens and there is minimal dialogue. However, it is enjoyable and easy to watch.
