After yesterday’s uninspiring film, I decided to go for something much more satisfying. The Host is a wonderfully low-budget, monster B-movie from South Korea, reminiscent of 60’s Godzilla films and just as much fun, though with some tragic moments.
The monster in The Host has mutated due to toxic chemicals disposed of by unscrupulous Americans into the Han river, and goes on a killing spree along the river banks a few years later. It carries off a young teenager, and her madcap family go on the run from the authorities to find her.
It’s not perfect, but it’s fun, well-acted and the CGI monster is genuinely creepy and unsettling.
